Data Usage Policy

Last Updated: April 20, 2025

Overview

This Data Usage Policy explains how Expedition America City Discoverer ("we," "our," or "us") collects, stores, uses, and manages your data. We are committed to transparency and want to ensure you understand how your data is handled when using our application.

1. Data Collection

Location Data: Our primary function is to discover cities and states you visit. To do this, we collect:

  • GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude)
  • City and state names derived from these coordinates
  • Timestamps of when you visited each location

Usage Data: We collect data about how you use the app, including:

  • When you start and stop your expedition
  • App feature usage statistics
  • Session duration and frequency
2. Data Storage

Your travel data is stored in two ways:

  • Local Storage: A copy of your travel history is stored locally on your device for quick access and offline functionality.
  • Cloud Storage: Your data is securely stored in our database to allow for data recovery, cross-device synchronization, and backup purposes.

We use industry-standard encryption and security practices to protect your data in transit and at rest.

3. Data Retention

We retain your travel data for as long as you maintain an active account with our service. You can delete specific entries from your travel history or your entire account at any time.

If you don't use the app for 12 consecutive months, we may archive your data, but it can be restored upon your return.

4. Data Usage

We use your data for the following purposes:

  • Core Functionality: To discover and display your visited cities and states
  • Personalization: To provide statistics and insights about your travels
  • Improvements: To analyze usage patterns and improve app functionality
  • Technical Support: To diagnose and fix technical issues
5. Offline Data Handling

When you use the app offline:

  • Your device continues recording your location
  • Locations are stored temporarily as coordinates
  • When you reconnect to the internet, these coordinates are converted to city and state names
  • All offline data is then synchronized with our cloud database
6. Data Controls

You have control over your data through the following options:

  • Expedition Control: You can start or stop your expedition at any time
  • Data Export: You can export your travel history for your records
  • Data Deletion: You can delete individual locations or all of your data
  • Account Deletion: You can delete your account, which removes all your data from our systems
7. Data Usage Limits

We implement the following limits on data usage:

  • Location updates occur at maximum every 30 seconds to conserve battery
  • We only process location changes greater than 0.5 miles to reduce data usage
  • Data is synchronized with our servers only when you have a Wi-Fi connection, unless you change this setting
8. Data Sharing

We do not sell your data to third parties. Your data may be shared in limited circumstances as described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Data Usage Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes through the app or by email.
